Mountains in Abruzzo

Abruzzo was once, recently denominated “the Greenest Region in Europe”. Hence, it offers large areas of forest, national parks and breathtaking scenery. There are bears, wolves, eagles, wild boars and mountain goats still living wild in the mountains – don’t worry it is very safe!

The Appennini mountain range stretch along the boarder between Abruzzo and Lazio. The mountains are 3000 meters high, so in the winter there is a long skiing season and in the summer you can escape the city heat and enjoy fresh cool air.

The mountain and beach combiation offer amazing landscapes and views, due to the proximity of one hours drive from the ski resorts to the beach. The mountains offer abundant water supplies, filling up lakes and rivers, a diversity of wildlife and fauna, sports activities, green fields and forests and diversity in food.
The traditional ways of the Abruzzo people means you get the best meat where the meat comes from – 0 km food – so, you want good meat and chees, go to the mountains.

Borrello has one of many spectacular waterfalls to visit. Located in Fara San Martino there are natural springs and canals, rushing down the mountain and feeding into the pasta factories further down the hill. Casoli and Bomba lakes provide warming scenery as well as various water sports and picnic areas. From Pretoro you get to view the rolling Abruzzi hills descending down towards the beach. In winter from la Maielletta , almost 2000 meters high, you can witness a white sea of virgin snow reaching to the horizon. In Palena the mountain creates a never ending vertical wall of solid rock offering either adventurous rock climbing and hiking or for the less adventurous a chair lift into the famous grottos. At Passo Lanciano ski resort, with the sun setting behind the mountain, a spectacle to be witnessed is darkness on the Adriatic side of Abruzzo and light on the top of the mountain and light on the Mediterranean side. Breathtaking.

The sports are varied too. There are clubs and course to go rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, running, hiking, skiing, truffle and mushroom hunting and horse riding. If, like me, you prefer a gentle walk, then just go off with friends to mapped routes for all levels of difficulty.
At the height of summer, when the beaches are too hot and crowded, the air is heavy with no breeze and the sun in inescapable … the mountains offer an escape that is not to be underestimated. Walks along rivers, in the shade, followed by an evenings meal and fresh clean air! Wow, you can’t believe how good it feels.
